Plymouth will host a Cancer Summit on Thursday 12th February. This will see hundreds of health professionals gather together to inform future cancer care in Plymouth.

The day will be kicked off by a patient telling their story and a performance from ‘Hot Mustard’, a singing group made up of both staff and patients that have used our Mustard Tree Macmillan Centre’s facilities.

A range of national speakers and discussion sessions will take place, including talks from Sean Duffy, National Clinical Cancer Director and Professor Jane Maher, Chief Medical Officer, Macmillan Cancer Support.

Dr Francis Daniel, Director of Cancer Services at Plymouth Hospitals NHS Trust said: “We know there are a greater proportion of older people and more people being diagnosed with cancer, who are living longer with and beyond cancer treatment and we therefore need to be ready. The Cancer Summit will bring together national leaders, local innovators and regional health professionals, to ensure Plymouth

Hospitals is planning ahead for the treatments of tomorrow as well as the essential holistic support services it needs to provide to patients.

“It is a great opportunity to bring people together to showcase best practice, research and innovation, as well as take a considered, future focused and comprehensive view about the way in which we plan our cancers services over the next ten years.

“The event will help inform our strategy with what is on the horizon in terms of technology and the way in which care is provided, and how excellence can be delivered amid growing patient demand for services, rising costs of providing care and constrained public resources.’’

Every year, Plymouth Hospitals sees and treats 3,500 patients with cancer. If you are a healthcare professional and would like to attend, please register with Eventbrite or contact shirleyharker@nhs.net before Monday 26th January
