Costa proposals could kick-start Broadway’s planned regeneration

The consultation period for a proposed new 1,500 sq ft Costa pod on Plymstock Broadway has now closed. If approved, the new unit would mark the beginning of a wider regeneration programme for the Broadway, creating jobs, improving the shopping centre and helping to attract exciting new additional retailers.

The planning application, due to go to Plymouth City Council’s planning committee on 12 March, would deliver 10 new jobs to the area , if approved. The new ‘pod’ unit would have a modern glass frontage, with capacity for over 50 customers inside the unit and seating for 28 outside. The ‘pod’ has been specifically designed to provide an attractive year-round space for shoppers and complement the planned wider regeneration works.

Kerry Parkin, Spokesperson for Costa said: "If approved, the new Costa would provide greater choice for customers and a new, high quality social meeting space, as well as valuable jobs and investment for the local area.

"We look forward to Plymouth City Council’s decision on the proposed unit in the coming months."

Until December 2014, the pedestrian Mall was owned and managed by Plymouth City Council. Praxis, on behalf of the owner Great End Properties Limited, acquired the Mall to bring forward a regeneration programme that will improve the look and feel of the Broadway. Alongside, the new Costa unit, improvements will include extensive new landscaping and improvements to paving and public space - creating a more attractive and appealing leisure and retail space. 

The plans for the Broadway include brand new planting with trees, evergreens and colourful perennials alongside the installation of quality seating and new street furniture.

Praxis intends to further develop the centre through ‘phase two’ and ‘phase three’ regenerations – further transforming the Broadway into a vibrant retail space. 

Praxis intends to submit its proposals to regenerate the Broadway to Plymouth City Council in the coming weeks.
