Clinical research support and advice for nursing and allied health professionals
A series of seminars will be held this week for nurses, midwives and allied health professionals as part of a Clinical Research Awareness Week.
The event is being jointly hosted by Plymouth Hospitals NHS Trust and the Clinical Schools with Plymouth University and will comprise of four seminars over the course of the week, covering topics such as the differences between research and audit, support available including the library resources, funding and approval processes.
The week will end with an all-day research symposium on Friday, which will showcase the wealth of NHS research being carried out by nurses and AHPs in the South West and will include talks from key people involved in supporting research.
Dr Helen Neilens, Research Advisor/Innovation Lead for Plymouth Hospitals NHS Trust, said: “This is the first event of its kind in Plymouth and we are delighted to be hosting it with our partners at the university.”
Professor Jos Latour, one of the heads of the Clinical Schools, added: “We want to demonstrate that great research is conducted across the Peninsula by nurses and Allied Health Professionals. The aim is to inspire others and show that there are opportunities for all to get involved and have access to support that is available.”
The Professor-led Clinical Schools have been developed from partnerships between clinicians and academics across the Peninsula with an aim to embed evidence-based practice and optimise opportunities for nursing and midwifery led research associated with clinical practice. There are four clinical school hubs located within the acute Hospital NHS Trusts in the South West Peninsula (Plymouth Hospitals NHS Trust; Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust; Royal Devon & Exeter NHS Foundation Trust and Taunton & Somerset NHS Foundation Trust).
The main focus for the Clinical Schools are to encourage nurses, midwives and other allied health professionals to look at their practice, challenge current thinking, try out new ideas and work out ways to measure what they’re doing. The Clinical Schools are led by Professor Ruth Endacott, Professor Bridie Kent and Professor Jos Latour. The Professors are working part of the week in the above NHS Trusts and Professor Latour is seen regularly working in PHNT.
