Award-winning Exeter-based fit20 was opened at Phillip House six years ago by entrepreneur Duncan Attwood.  Based on just one 20-minute workout per week, fit20 is scientifically proven to significantly improve muscle strength and overall health. It has been so successful Mr. Attwood has expanded by setting up a second studio in Torquay as part of his growing franchise.

Duncan Attwood says: "I am so excited to be opening my second fit20 franchise in Torquay and growing the business.” He explains: “My journey into fitness started when I was a child. I was overweight and had numerous health issues. Exercise wasn’t part of my life until I stumbled into whitewater kayaking, which led me to train with Olympic coaches. This experience transformed my physique and, more importantly, my health. Realising the profound impact exercise had on my life, I pursued a degree in sports science and a master’s degree, dedicating my career to helping others achieve their fitness goals. fit20 stood out to me because of its focus on efficient and effective strength training. It also can change the composition of one’s body as fat is replaced by muscle.”

The fit20 training method is based on the results of a large-scale study undertaken in 2022 by Solent Universityresearch team led by Solent University Associate Professor of Sport and Exercise Sciences, Dr James Steele. and published by Research Quarterly for Exercise and Sport. It is the largest study ever done within sports and exercise science with nearly 15,000 people participating in fit20's 'minimum effective dose' training approach.

Duncan confirms: “The study tracked nearly 15,000 fit20 participants for up to seven years. The results showed that participants saw a 30 to 50 percent increase in strength in the first year and 50 to 60 percent total strength gains. These gains were seen regardless of age, gender, or fitness level.”

fit20 member Glen King who lives in Exeter joined in August 2022 and quickly felt positive benefits. She says: “I knew I had to start taking more care of my health, however the thought of joining a gym and wearing Lycra® fills me with horror!  Thank goodness I discovered fit20, an innovative, unique, and proven training method based on extensive research.

"I go once a week with a personal trainer who ensures I’m doing the exercises properly and training at a slow and precise pace in a custom-cooled studio, meaning I can wear my everyday clothes without breaking into a sweat. The five pieces of equipment give me a complete body workout and each exercise is from a sitting position, so suitable for all ages.”

She clarifies: “We use our abdominal muscles standing, sitting, and walking so it's important to move your body and increase core strength and stability, particularly as we get older.  I can honestly say fit20  has helped improve my overall health and well-being.”

Duncan concludes: “Our team of dedicated personal trainers in Exeter and Torquay are certified through our fit20Academy and here to guide our members every step of the way.  They help with technique, posture, motivation, and more.  I couldn’t do this without the support and enthusiasm of my team.”
