How to Prepare for Your Moving Day
Moving house can be an intensely stressful process, especially if you haven’t put in the right preperation. Let’s think about what you might do in the build-up to the big move, in order to ease the strain and ensure that there aren’t any problems.
Figure out the logistics
You’ll want an idea of exactly how you’re going to transport everything. You’ll have a few options here. You can either get in touch with a removal company, who’ll deal with everything in-house. Or you can rent a van and deal with the move yourself. If you know someone with a van, then you might find the latter option particularly affordable. Take out temporary car insurance for a day, and you’ll be covered even if the van isn’t yours. Just be sure to read the small print, and ensure that the goods are covered, too.
Declutter prior to moving
It should go without saying that the more stuff you end up taking, the more difficult things are going to be. While you’re packing, you can set aside a few extra boxes. One might be destined for the local charity shop; another might go straight down to your local tip.
Decluttering can be an immensely cathartic process, but it can be difficult for many to take the first step. Now that you have the deadline of your move there to motivate you, you’ll be more inclined to get started.
Identify the breakables and valuables
Before the move gets started, you’ll want to make sure you’ve identified all of the items that are delicate or valuable – that way, the movers will know to handle those items with particular care. While this isn’t a guarantee that you won’t suffer any losses or damage during transit, it might be the small measure that makes all the difference.
Proceed one room at a time
Ideally, you won’t do it all in a single weekend: spread your packing over a longer period, and you’ll be able to get it done without having a huge task hanging over your head. The best way to do it is probably to pack one room at a time. Not only will you be able to break the task down this way, you’ll also get a clear sense of progress. If you simply pack items at random, then you’re almost certain to end up stressed!
Ask for help in advance
Are you going to need to recruit a few friends or family members to help you with the move? If so, it’s generally a good idea to provide them with plenty of notice. The earlier you ask, the more likely they are to be available when you need them.
