New Lord Mayor of Plymouth announced

Councillor Dr John Mahony, a Conservative Councillor for the Peverell Ward, will take over the reins from the current Lord Mayor, Councillor Michael Fox.

The ceremony took place today in the Lord's Mayor Dining Room at the Council House.

Councillor Dr Mahony said: "Having been born and lived in Plymouth for most of my life I am greatly honoured and privileged to be selected as Lord Mayor elect.”

"I will be looking forward to meeting many of the citizens of Plymouth over the next year including those involved in the voluntary and charitable sectors.”

The 58-year-old councillor has worked as a GP in the city since 1984 until he retired in 2013; he also served as deputy lord mayor between 2003 and 2004.

He was first elected as a Councillor for the old Trelawney ward in 2000 before he was re-elected for the Peverell ward in 2003.

Councillor Dr Mahony is currently a member of the Caring Plymouth scrutiny panel and vice chair of the audit committee as well as a serving member of the Health and & Well Being board.
