#WearItWild and help protect wildlife
With just over two weeks left until WWF’s ‘Wear It Wild’, Ambassador Ben Fogle is asking people in Plymouth to get on board and help protect threatened wildlife around the world.
There’s still time to join the annual fundraising event on Friday 27th May, which is supported by players of People’s Postcode Lottery. From local schools to businesses and groups of friends, WWF is challenging everyone to show their wild side by donning animal-inspired fancy dress.
There are all sorts of ways you can get involved:
- Fancy dress competition – while you’re wearing your animal print jumper, leggings or onesie why not vote on has the most stylish stripes or the silliest spots?
- Bake sale – with all that hard work you’ll need some sustenance so why not combine dressing up with some tasty animal themed treats? Past creations have included panda biscuits and cupcakes sporting lions’ heads;
- Wildlife quiz – who knows the most about the animals we share our planet with? With the weird and the wonderful creatures out there, you might learn some surprising and astonishing facts.
- Animal Olympics – who’s the fastest, strongest, highest jumper, or longest distance traveller? Have a work or school sports day and show off your animal talents.
- Curriculum-related resources – schools can help inspire the next generation as pupils discover more about their favourite wild animals and see the world through their eyes.
Ben Fogle said: “Sadly there are just 4,800 black rhinos in the wild today with, on average, three rhinos a day poached in South Africa. Rhinos have been around for millions of years and it’s crucial we help to protect their future.
“But it’s not just this armoured giant that’s at risk. In WWF’s Living Planet Report we revealed the devastating loss of wild species - 52% since 1970. Tigers, elephants, lions, polar bears, snow leopards and of course wild giant pandas are just some of the incredible species that could be at risk of extinction in our lifetime.
"As a WWF ambassador, I’m determined to help change this trend and I know we can. But I need your help to do it.”
By taking part in Wear it Wild, as well as having a fun day with your friends, family and colleagues, you’ll be raising awareness and much needed funds to help WWF’s work to protect these precious yet threatened species and the habitats we all rely on.
All funds raised through donations for Wear it Wild will help support WWF’s vital work. Just £5 can help towards food and vet bills for a sniffer dog trained to track down people smuggling illegal tiger parts. £20 can support researchers taking blood samples from two polar bears to provide crucial evidence on how climate change is affecting them. £120 could pay for one camera to help monitor wild giant pandas.
Everyone can take part in Wear it Wild on Friday 27 May. Simply visit: wwf.org.uk/wearitwild, dress up and donate to help protect our wildlife and our planet. Don’t forget to share #WearItWild so we can see what you have planned.
