The Chapel Tearoom is a new experience at Saltram near Plympton in Plymouth, where visitors can be served light lunches and afternoon tea amid décor inspired by the late Victorian and early Edwardian era.

The teas have been specially selected to compliment the variety of homemade cakes on offer, all beautifully laid out on fine china and crisp white linen.

The Tearoom takes inspiration from the many parties and celebrations held within the garden at Saltram. The fifth Earl of Morley, Montagu Parker, once held a garden party with 100 guests and the Parker family often enjoyed taking afternoon tea in the orangery or at the castle folly while taking in the views over to Plymouth. Today visitors can now enjoy taking tea and celebrating in much the same way.

In the weeks leading up to the Tearoom opening, visitors were asked if they could donate any tea cups, saucers and cake plates to be used in the new tearoom; and the property was overwhelmed by the offerings of fine china which came in thick and fast.

Jane Burrell, Catering Manager, remarked: “we are all really inspired by the idea of re-creating the experiences that the Parker family had here at Saltram. There is nothing better than enjoying real tea and gorgeous cake in the beautiful setting of Saltram’s garden. Also, we can’t thank enough all those that donated their china and we hope that they will want to come to the tearoom to see it being used.”

The experience continues upstairs within the Chapel Gallery where some of Devon’s finest handmade arts and crafts are on sale.

The Chapel Tearoom serves afternoon tea and light lunches from 11am – 4.30pm within the Garden. The Gallery is also open 11am- 4.30pm. For more information, please visit www.nationaltrust.org.uk/saltram or call 01752 333500.
