Portrait of Michael Foot goes on auction in aid of 100 years memorial

A portrait of the politician and lifelong Plymouth Argyle supporter Michael Foot is to be auctioned in aid of a memorial to him in Plymouth city centre.

The event is being held at Plymouth Council Chambers on Tuesday 23 July (6.30pm – 8.30pm) in celebration of 100 years since his birth. Members of the public are invite to attend from 6.30pm for a reception drink and nibbles.

Michael Foot who died at the age of 96 in 2010, led the Labour Party in opposition between 1980 and 1983 and was a director of Argyle. He was born in the city and was MP for Plymouth Devonport in the early part of his political career.

The print of a portrait by Robert Lenkiewicz is up for auction in aid of the Michael Foot Memorial Fund and will be on public view in the council chamber. The original canvas hangs in Portcullis House in Westminster.

The meeting will be attended by Council Leader, Tudor Evans, Labour's parliamentary candidate for Plymouth Sutton and Devonport Luke Pollard and Plymouth Argyle director and friend of Michael Foot's, Peter Jones, among others. Information about the memorial appeal will be given followed by tributes.

The audience will then be invited to contribute any remarks about Michael Foot and his contribution to Plymouth.

There will then be thanks from Michael’s niece, Alison Highet, who will also draw the raffle.
