New Plymouth police commander appointed
Chief Superintendent Dave Thorne has been announced as the new Plymouth police commander, following a promotion process that took place last week.
He takes up his new position with immediate effect, following a brief period in the role in a temporary capacity. Dave Thorne had been a superintendent in the city for the last 18 months.
Chief Superintendent Dave Thorne said: “I am delighted to be given this important role and I’m looking forward to working closely with our good friends and partners helping to keep our communities safe from harm. I also want to pay tribute to my predecessor who has laid some solid foundations on which my team can continue to build upon.
“I recognise that all those organisations involved in keeping the city safe, tackling its social ills and increasing the city’s prosperity will no doubt face challenges, however I believe by working together, with commitment and enthusiasm we can continue to forge a positive future for Plymouth and I relish the opportunity to continue developing the healthy relationship the police in Plymouth enjoys with its many and diverse partners.”
The move has come about after the previous commander, Andy Boulting was promoted to assistant chief constable, following the departure of Deputy Chief Constable Bill Skelly, who became the chief constable of Lincolnshire.
Tracey Lee, Plymouth City Council’s chief executive, said: “I’m really pleased to have been part of the appointments process for the new police commander in Plymouth. It reflects the importance of the relationship between the City Council and Devon and Cornwall Police as we work closely together on a wide range of shared priorities for Plymouth.
“I’m delighted that we have been able to appoint someone of David’s experience and I am looking forward to working with him.
“I would also like to thank Andy Boulting for his continued commitment and support to policing in Plymouth and wish him all the best for his new role.”
Dave Thorne is a former secondary school teacher in science and outdoor education. He has been with Devon and Cornwall Police since 1999 and has spent much of his career working on child abuse investigations, critical incidents and later with major crime investigations. He has also spent many years working in Plymouth earlier in his career.
