New grit bin for Westcountry Close
Residents in and around Westcountry Close in Weston Mill will find it easier to get around safely this winter, thanks to a new community grit bin funded through Plymouth City Council’s Living Streets scheme.
Council Leader and local ward councillor Tudor Evans provided the grit bin through his Living Streets budget to make it easier for people living nearby to keep their roads clear in icy and snowy conditions.
Local resident and ward councillor Tina Tuohy and her husband Ray are volunteers on the Council’s snow warden scheme and were there to see the new bin installed. As snow wardens they are provided with large bags of salt but they welcomed the new grit bin as an extra way for residents to help keep their neighbourhood safe in winter.
Council Leader Tudor Evans said: “The Living Streets scheme enables councillors to request additional improvements that will directly benefit residents in their local ward. There are already more than 400 highway grit bins around the city but extra community grit bins like this make it that little bit easier for people to keep residential roads clear.”
Volunteer snow wardens help to keep their local community moving during winter by clearing footpaths of snow and salting footpaths where necessary. They also monitor salt levels in their local grit bins and report any issues with the roads.
