Man seriously assaulted on Mutley Plain

A 23 year old Plymouth man has been seriously injured after being attacked on the junction between Mutley Plain and Ermington Terrace on Saturday (13 April).

The man is currently in hospital where his condition is being described as stable. It is thought that he received a number of injuries to the body though police are not revealing the nature of the injuries at this time.

A 45 year old man was later arrested on suspicion of attempted murder by police and a second man was arrested on Sunday in connection with the incident. Both men are currently in police custody at Crownhill police station while enquiries continue.

The man was attacked shortly after getting into a taxi with a woman. Police detectives are examining the exact circumstances leading up to the incident and the motive behind the assault. A number of lines of enquiry are being followed.

Detective Superintendent Keith Perkin said: “As this investigation is in its early stages, many details are still being established.  This was a serious incident that took place at a busy time when there were quite a few people in and around the vicinity.

“I would like to reassure local residents that we believe the victim and offenders are known to each other. As part of the investigation, a number of house to house enquiries will take place.  There will also be additional high visibility patrols being carried out by neighbourhood officers to reassure the local community.

Detective Superintendent Perkin said: “It must have been quite disturbing for those innocent bystanders who were around at the time of the incident and for local residents hearing about this incident this morning.  It is important that we now carry out a thorough investigation to bring whoever did this to justice.

“I would urge anyone who has any information that might help police enquiries to contact us as soon as possible.  The critical time I’m concerned with is from around 10.30pm leading up to the incident that took place shortly before 11pm.  If you were in the vicinity of Mutley Plain around these times it’s possible you saw or heard something that could vital in the police investigation.

“There would have been a number of people on the street and in vehicles – in particular we are keen for any person who was on a Megabus who drove passed the incident at the time.  If you were on that bus and saw something, please contact us.”
