Teddy Bears hospital and life-size operation game at Derriford Open Day
Where can you find a life-size operation game, a Teddy Bears’ Hospital and the opportunity to look inside a real operating theatre?
At Derriford Hospital's Open Day on Saturday 28 September 2013.
For the first time in more than a decade, the hospital is holding an Open Day and there really will be something for everyone.
Derriford's specialist staff, who care for children right across the hospital and beyond into the community, will be on hand in Plym Children’s Theatres, next to the main entrance between 10am and 2pm.
Children (and adults!) will be able to ‘perform surgery’, learn how to bandage and plaster and play a life-size operation game, whilst hearing from the team about life inside a children’s operating theatre. Children are also invited to bring up their teddy bears and soft toys for a health check at the Teddy Bears’ Hospital. All teddies will get a patient booklet and a bravery sticker!
Sarah Wimlett, Consultant Paediatric Anaesthetist at Derriford Hospital, said: “We are delighted to be taking part in the Open Day.
“The Children’s Theatre Unit at Derriford Hospital is the only dedicated children’s surgical unit in the south west peninsula and the team are really looking forward to showing children and their parents around. We have a range of child-friendly activities planned with the aim of demystifying what happens when a child comes to hospital for a procedure.”
Children will also have the opportunity to design some new ‘scrubs’ (theatre clothes) in the colouring competition. There will also be face painting and balloon modelling and lots more!
The Open Day will be followed by the Trust’s Annual General Meeting in the Post Graduate Medical Centre at 2pm.
