There’s no better way to experience the secret coves of the Salcombe estuary than by taking to the water.

That’s why National Trust ambassador Dave Halsall, from Singing Paddles, is leading an exclusive tour on Sunday 4 September through the meandering creeks around Salcombe.

People of all abilities can have a go in the Canadian style canoes, with expert guide David sharing a keen knowledge of the local area’s history and wildlife. Part of the mini expedition will include a short break on one of the secluded shores, with tea brewed on wood burning fires washed down with a piece of cake.

“We always have a laugh on these trips, and Salcombe is a great area with sheltered routes and lots of wildlife to spot,” says David, who has canoed all over the world and set up Singing Paddles in 2008. “It’s another way to introduce people to the wildlife and conservation needs of the area, and working in partnerships with organisations like the National Trust is something I’m proud of.”

The Salcombe estuary is part of the South Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), as well as a designated Site of Special Scientific Interest. With sandy beaches, rocky shores and a serene atmosphere, it’s easy to see why this area is so well-loved.

“Canoeing along this route enables the public to see our sites from a completely different perspective,” says National Trust ranger Ricky Callan, who will be joining the trip, “People really enjoy the peace and tranquillity on the estuary, and the close encounters with the wildlife on the water. It’s also a great opportunity to share the work we do to care for these special places.”
