Talk: Parliament, women and the vote

A Historical Association and University of Plymouth history department talk

On 6 February 1918 the Representation of the People Act gave the vote to virtually all men and to women over the age of 30 who met a property qualification.

In this talk, Dr Mari Takayanagi will use items from Parliament's archives and art collections to explore the story of Parliament, women and the vote. She will discuss the peaceful suffragist campaign led by Millicent Fawcett, the militant suffragette campaign led by Emmeline Pankhurst, how the 1918 Act came to pass, and the election of the first women MPs.
