Royal William Yard Ocean Festival Screen 2013

19th, 20th, 22nd September

FREE

For the second year running Plymouth Arts Centre and Dartington Barn Cinema are very excited to present this year’s programme of outdoor screenings at the Royal William Yard. We have put together a seaside themed series of films that hopefully have something for everyone to enjoy, including a short programme of South West-made films before each main feature.

As is usual in the cinema, the films will start as the lights go down. In this case, as we are outdoors, when the sun goes down at around 8.30pm. Bring a blanket, a camp chair, a picnic and maybe an umbrella!

Thursday 19th September

Point Break (15)

Dir. Kathryn Bigelow, USA, 1991, 120 mins. Cast. Patrick Swayze, Keanu Reeves, Gary Busey, Lori Petty.

From our first glimpse of a surfer hovering through a cascading wave to the final sky-diving stunt, Kathryn Bigelow's fourth feature keeps offering new thrills with unapologetic verve. Is Point Break the best summer film ever? The answer is, probably not, but it comes pretty close and for a few good reasons. There are surfing bank robbers who dress up as former US presidents, the characters are called things like Bodhi and Johnny Utah, because there is an entire action sequence that hinges on a malfunctioning lawnmower and because Kathryn Bigelow directed some of the best, most exciting chase scenes in modern cinema. If you have never seen this film, you are about to be initiated into a cult classic, if you have seen it, come and shout your favourite lines at the screen.

Friday 20th September

Pacific Rim (12A)

Dir. Guillermo del Toro, USA, 2013, 130 mins. Cast. Idris Elba, Charlie Hunnam, Rinko Kikuchi, Ron Perlman.

To get everyone in the mood for Resurgam where monsters emerge from the sea to threaten Plymouth tomorrow night, we thought we would offer up this summer’s biggest blockbuster that also happens to be about monsters emerging from the sea to threaten humanity. Guillermo del Toro’s latest genre film is a monster mash-up as a war between humankind and monstrous sea creatures wages on, a former pilot and a trainee are paired up to drive a seemingly obsolete special weapon in a desperate effort to save the world from the apocalypse.

As one critic said, this film is ridiculously entertaining.

Sunday 22nd September

Some Like It Hot (12)

Dir. Billy Wilder, USA, 1959, 122 mins. Cast. Marilyn Monroe, Jack Lemmon, Tony Curtis, Joe E. Brown.

In a cinema classic, Jack Lemmon and Tony Curtis play Gerry and Joe, witnesses to a Chicago mob murder who flee to Miami Beach, Florida with an all-girl jazz band disguised as Daphne and Josephine. They meet Sugar (Marilyn Monroe) a down-on-her-luck ukulele player with her heart set on marrying a millionaire. Sun-soaked hijinks and spirited cross-dressing are bookended by two brutal massacres, which Wilder doesn't soften for family viewing, while sinister mob boss "Spats" Colombo stalks through the film like a pantomime villain, gun trained on the dames. Driving the story is a whip-smart script, delivered at times like machine-gun fire. Wilder prioritised story and script over cinematic flourishes, and the simplicity of his direction lets you wallow in great one-liners. I won't mention the infamous last line, except to say it's not the only humdinger.
