Devonport Naval Heritage Centre Open Day
Visit the Naval Heritage Centre and discover how the dockyard of the 1690s has grown into the largest Naval Base in Western Europe, and led to the creation of both Devonport and Torpoint.
Explore eight galleries of artefacts displayed in adjacent buildings in the historic South Yard. Take a guided tour of decommissioned nuclear submarine HMS Courageous to gain a fascinating glimpse into the world of the “Silent Service” (tours available throughout the day, booking available on-site at 10am, noon and 2pm, ID required for over 16s, under 16s must be accompanied, min 4ft/1.2m height, sensible clothing/footwear, physically capable of climbing vertical ladders).
A wide range of displays and activities together with a programme of short talks/slide shows including a presentation on the work of the SHIPs project – the Maritime History of the Plymouth Sound from prehistoric times to present day.
Free entry and nearby parking with refreshments available on-site.
Programmes will be available on the gate and donations to help maintain the exhibitions are welcomed.
