Police investigate arson at a Plymouth building site
Police are investigating arson at a Plymouth building site which caused £90,000 of damage over the Christmas break.
Between 20 December and 2 January 2 a digger was stolen and driven on a rampage around the site of the new incinerator close to Savage Road leading towards Barne Road and Wolseley Road.
The Thwaites digger was used to cause damage to other plant and a wastage unit within the compound. The digger then crashed and was set ablaze resulting in Devon Fire and Rescue attending the scene.
Investigating officer Sgt David Eames said that police were taking the matter very seriously.
“As well as the significant financial loss, I am also concerned about the safety of the individuals who have qualified themselves to drive such specialist machinery,” he said.
“Although it may be appealing, driving a digger could result in serious injury and it is incredibly fortunate no one was hurt during this incident.”
Police are appealing for witnesses who may have been in the area which is described as being the new incinerator site close to Savage Road. Any suspicious activity between December 20 and January 2 should be reported to the police.
