Final fortnight for major Artists Make Faces exhibition
There are only two weeks left to catch Plymouth City Museum and Art Gallery’s blockbuster art exhibition ‘Artists Make Faces’.
The not-to-be-missed exhibition features nearly 60 artworks by internationally celebrated artists including Lucian Freud, LS Lowry, Frank Auerbach, Marc Quinn and Gilbert and George. It will close at 5pm on Saturday 7 December.
Artists Make Faces is presented in partnership with Peninsula Arts, Plymouth University, and is the vision of Monika Kinley OBE – a pioneering curator who moved to the Plymouth area in 2005 and was recognised in the 2012 New Year’s Honours List for her services to the arts.
The exhibition is a realisation of a long-held idea of Monika’s to create a show of works where artists have taken the face and used it as a canvas to explore different themes. It features a distinctive and personal selection of works from public art galleries and collections including Arts Council England, Tate and the Whitworth, some of which have never previously toured.
“We’ve been absolutely delighted with the feedback that Artists Make Faces has received since we launched it earlier in the Autumn," said Nicola Moyle, Head of Arts and Heritage. "Our visitors have really welcomed the chance to see a show that features such a fantastic variety of works and styles – all from an amazing line-up of significant artists from the 20th century."
Artists Make Faces has been supported by a series of events, some of which will take place during this final fortnight. A free guided tour will run from 3pm to 3.45pm on Thursday 28 November, family-friendly activities inspired by the exhibition will be on offer on Saturday 30 November and Saturday 7 December, and there will be a short talk about Gilbert and George from 3pm to 3.15pm on Friday 6 December. Full details about all of these are available from the what’s on pages at www.plymouthmuseum.gov.uk.
Artists Make Faces is on display at Plymouth City Museum and Art Gallery from 10am to 5.30pm Tuesday to Friday and 10am to 5pm Saturday. Admission is free.
