Match Day Preview: Swindon Town v Plymouth Argyle
Swindon Town v Plymouth Argyle
Johnstone's Paint Trophy 2nd Round, Tuesday 8 October 2013 (kick-off 7.45pm)
Argyle head for their second Westcountry derby in four days as they travel to Swindon for their Johnstone's Paint Trophy second round tie hoping to avoid a fifth consecutive game without a win.
A cup tie against League One opposition could be a welcome distraction from the Pilgrims' recent disappointing league form. Having overcome Cheltenham after a penalty shoot-out in the first round, Plymouth will be looking to cause an upset at the County Ground, with the pressure of expectation against the Robins somewhat lowered.
The team may see changes for Tuesday night's trip to Wiltshire, as manager John Sheridan looks to give an opportunity for players to shine. After the deflating defeat at Exeter where a decent performance on the day counted for nothing, the players will need to show their spirit for the fight over the next few games.
“We’re on a run where we’re playing alright, but we’re losing games," said the Greens' boss.
He told the club's website: "It’s the mentality and the will to win on the football pitch. And it’s only the players who can take care of that.”
Rising Argyle star Tyler Harvey is one who could come into the reckoning for the match, though the manager is careful not to put pressure on the teenager's young shoulders:
“Tyler’s a young kid with potential,” said Sheridan. “He’s got lots of potential, but he’s an 18-year-old kid."
The fans will be hoping for an encouraging performance at least, ahead of Saturday's crucial League Two game against fallen giants Portsmouth at Home Park.
