Police need help in identifying a man they would like to speak to after a woman’s handbag was snatched and she was pulled to the ground in the centre of Plymouth.

The alleged street robbery happened on Tuesday 10 September at around 5.45am by the sundial at the junction of New George Street and Armada Way.

The 68-year-old woman was on her way to work when a man ran up behind her saying “I’ll have that”, grabbed her handbag and wrenched it from her causing her to fall to the floor and suffer an injury to her wrist.

The black leather shoulder bag which was taken contained a Samsung Galaxy phone valued at around £200 and a set of house keys.

The suspect is described as a white male, 6ft tall, aged between 20 and 30, of average build, with short dark hair. He was wearing a grey long sleeved top and spoke with a local accent.

The woman was helped by two men immediately after the robbery and they may have seen what happened.

DC Joe Mercer, from the local investigation team, said: “If you were one of the men who kindly went to the woman’s aid or if you know who the man in the picture is, please get in touch with police.”

Anyone recognising the pair or who witnessed the incident is asked to call police on 101 quoting reference EC/13/8800, or alternatively call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
