Sophia Coppola’s latest film portrays the real-life story of a group of Los Angeles teenagers who went on a crime spree in the Hollywood hills, robbing celebrities. Using Googlemaps, Facebook updates and Twitter the gang could find out where their targets lived, whether they were likely to be at certain celebrity parties or out of the country and could therefore work out who to target. They stole more than $3 million in luxury goods from the likes of Paris Hilton and Lindsay Lohan. The gang became known in the media as "The Bling Ring." Coppola has created an intuitive and atmospheric film exploring the nature of our celebrity-obsessed culture and with her insider’s view of Hollywood she casts her cool eye over the gang’s need to feel connected to a world they live within sight of but can never really belong to.
