St George's Primary School in Plymouth will open as an academy for the new term in September, as part of the St Christopher’s Multi Academy Trust, set up by the Diocese of Exeter’s Board of Education to support schools becoming academies.

Bishop Nick McKinnel said he was “delighted” to welcome St George’s into the Trust. “St George’s is committed to meeting the needs of all its children and has a very caring ethos. Our multi-academy trust will support the school as it moves forward and goes from strength to strength.”

St George’s is one of just five Church of England primary schools in the city offering a distinctive ethos. The new Academy will pride itself in its village school style, which strongly supports and knows well all its pupils and their families. With no more than 105 pupils on its roll, “the strong Christian character of the school ensures a welcoming and inclusive environment.” (Ofsted Feb 2012).

There are still a few places for children in September.

Headteacher Sharon Hutchinson said: “Becoming an academy with the support of the diocese will help us ensure that we remain a school with strong pastoral support and Christian values. We are committed to continuing to driving up standards and help every child here fulfil their potential.”

St Christopher’s already has one secondary school, The Ilfracombe Academy, under its wing and St George’s will be joined in September by St Michael’s Church of England Primary Academy in Exeter.

There are a few spaces across most year groups so if you would like a place for St George’s for your child please e-mail the headteacher at slance@st-georges.plymouth.sch.uk or phone 01392 294923.
