Roman-inspired craft sessions for kids at City Museum

Children can make a range of Roman-inspired arts and crafts at Plymouth City Museum and Art Gallery on Saturday 27 July, when it marks the 2013 Festival of British Archaeology.

The ‘Roman Army’ sessions will run from 11am to midday, 1.30pm to 2.30pm and 3pm to 4pm and youngsters will be able to use a variety of craft materials to make a Roman shield, helmet and flag.

The sessions are part of the Museum and Art Gallery’s ‘Make and Take’ programme, which is aimed at children aged five to 11 and encourages them to work with their parents, grandparents or accompanying adults to explore their creative abilities. Events run throughout the year and are usually seasonal celebrating occasions such as Christmas, the Chinese New Year, Easter and Halloween.

The Festival of British Archaeology is an annual event co-ordinated by the Council for British Archaeology. It encourages people young and old to discover their inner archaeologists and meet the experts. There are over 1,000 events taking place nationwide this year between 13 and 28 July and full details can be found online at www.archaeologyfestival.org.uk.

The Museum’s ‘Uncovered’ gallery, which explores how archaeology can open a window on the past and help us understand the place we live in today contains some Roman finds as well as items from the Bronze and Iron Ages.

Admission to the Roman Army creative sessions is free although donations towards materials are welcome. Advance booking is advised on 01752 304774.
