A major five-month programme of road resurfacing and reconstruction is due to get under way in Plymouth on Monday 15 July.

The programme will run through to November and will see whole roads and larger sections of road across the city being resurfaced. These are the roads that suffered the worst damage after the prolonged period of wet weather over the winter.

As well as resurfacing, the works will include structural reconstruction to the worst affected areas and they will be carried out alongside the Council’s day-to-day road maintenance programme.

Plymouth City Council's highways contractor Amey will begin the resurfacing programme in the Stoke area, including Valletort Road, which suffered major deterioration over the winter months.

The first phase of the five month project, taking place during July 2013, will see resurfacing sites ranging in size from 898 to 3,978 square metres with an overall total of 14,815 square metres of resurfacing over eight roads.

The works follow a three-week citywide ‘blitz’ that saw more than 2,000 individual potholes repaired, as well as patching works to 24 roads where multiple potholes had developed and the general surface quality was deteriorating.

Council Leader Tudor Evans said: "Repairing the city’s roads is a major priority for the people of Plymouth and a major priority for us. We’re up against significant cuts to our highways funding but are working hard to make extra resources available and are investing an additional £20 million in road repairs over the next decade. We can’t resurface every road but we’re doing all we can to repair as many problem areas as possible.”

Local residents and businesses near the works are being notified in advance by letter and, where road closures are required, diversion routes will be signed. Access to properties will be maintained when and where possible.

Each month the Council is reporting on works completed and the roads being resurfaced in the forthcoming month. Details of the upcoming works will be published shortly on its website at www.plymouth.gov.uk/roadrepairs.
