Chaddlewood Primary School pupil Sophie wins road safety art competition
Sophie Hawke, from Chaddlewood Primary School, has won a school art competition with the theme of road safety.
Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service organised the competition for schools in the Plymouth and West Devon area to promote messages such as driver distractions and crossing the road safely.
The project followed a spike in the number of children killed or seriously injured on Plymouth roads in 2011/12 of 14, double the expected number of seven.
All Year 5 primary school pupils in the West Devon Group Area were invited to participate and 17 schools entered.
A winner from each school received a Toys R Us voucher and overall winner Sophie, aged nine, whose entry was chosen by the Chief Fire Officer, received a further Toys R Us voucher and a £500 cheque for her school.
The competition was organised by Green Watch Crownhill supported by the West Devon Group Community Safety Team.
