Plymouth University climbs modern elite world rankings
Plymouth University has been named one of world’s leading modern universities rising seven places to number 53 in the prestigious Times Higher Education 100 Under 50 2013 world rankings.
The league highlights the world’s best universities under 50 years old, with the institutions subjected to the same trusted and tough global standards established by the overall Times Higher Education World University Rankings, using 13 separate performance indicators covering the whole range of a university’s mission (teaching, research, knowledge transfer and international outlook) but carefully recalibrated to better suit the profile of a younger institution.
Times Higher Rankings Editor, Phil Baty said; “This new ranking sees Plymouth join a list of some truly exciting and dynamic institutions. The Times Higher Education 100 Under 50 rankings highlight those institutions that have joined the ranks of the world’s finest in a matter of years, while many of their competitors have had centuries of development, or those that are showing great potential for future success.
“The rankings highlight some exceptional achievements from fast-developing and exceptionally well-funded institutions in East Asia, notably in South Korea and Singapore. So for Plymouth to be rising in such a list against such tough global competition is a great achievement.”
Professor Wendy Purcell, Plymouth University Vice-Chancellor commented; “We have embarked on a transformational journey to be “the Enterprise University” with a mission focused on transforming lives through our innovative approach to teaching, learning and key areas of world-class research. This is producing high-value outcomes and complements our role in civic and regional leadership.
“Our focus on innovation and agility means that we are emerging strongly against the disruptive influences being experienced by higher education. Distinctiveness is the key, in terms of the real world student experience alongside world class research seeking solutions to the grand challenges of our day.”
