As it was recently National Allotments Week, there’s nothing quite like getting your thumbs green and your hands dirty in the garden! At Sundial Care Home, the team and residents, who the home fondly refer to as family members, are fortunate enough to have a beautiful garden that’s not only a retreat for local wildlife, but also a hub for growing vegetables, flowers and general plant life.

The residential care home near Sidmouth has been busy harvesting sunflower seeds – a rewarding activity that has proven excellent for strengthening hands and mobility. Family members take great pride in tending to the plants in the greenhouse, particularly the flourishing tomato plants, which have been recently ripe and ready to go straight to the dinner table. Sundial’s Kitchen Team have also been relishing in the freshly grown herbs, providing fragrant ingredients for their home-made dishes, blackcurrant sage has become a standout favourite.

The garden itself attracts many forms of wildlife such as a family of deer that visit almost daily, pheasants, squirrels, bees, butterflies and an abundance of different types of birds the family members like to sit and watch.

Sundials garden has become a cherished space, enriching the lives of those living and working there by adding colour, flavour and life into each day. As National Allotments Week is celebrated, the home encourages everyone to enjoy the fruits of their labour and find solace in the simple pleasures that gardening brings.
