Paw-sitive influence: Meet Bear

A funeral director in Torquay has recruited some additional support in the form of a special four-legged friend to further help grieving families.  

Bear, a black Labrador puppy, has been excelling in his new role as a therapy dog, providing comfort and support all under the careful supervision of his owner, funeral director Gary Watson. 

Starting his new job at just three months old, Bear – which stands for Bereavement Engagement and Recovery – even occasionally accompanies Gary to work at Co-op Funeralcare Moorview, Barton Road, offering his presence during select moments to families who find comfort in animal-assisted therapy. 

A certified ‘Good Boy,’ Bear is currently undergoing the Paws Therapy Dog CPD Certification Programme, training similar to that of a guide dog, which, in line with all the necessary requirements, ensures that his presence is both safe and beneficial for those who request his companionship. 

And Bear has even been on hand to comfort clients during arrangements, chapel visits and even on the day of the funeral if requested. He will also spend time visiting local hospices, nursing homes, schools, and events to offer his therapeutic presence to the wider community – in exchange for a competitive salary of treats and belly rubs. 

While not a permanent fixture at the funeral home, requests for Bear’s presence during arrangements is already having a considerable impact on families, even while he’s still in training. Bear’s excitable squeaking piqued the curiosity of one client, who said that his presence had helped them to feel calm and focused during the arrangements. 

Gary said: “Bear has taken to his role so quickly, and he’s already made a noticeable difference in those circumstances when comforting clients. I hope that for those that have experienced the death of a loved one, Bear will be able to lighten the load and put a smile on their faces. So far, everybody is loving a cuddle from Bear! 

“Bear’s unique role as a therapy dog underscores my own commitment working for Co-op Funeralcare in providing innovative and compassionate care for the bereaved, as it’s so important to recognise how everybody grieves differently.”
