Exhibition by Joanna Haskins - Arctic Impressions

The Brownston Gallery are proud to present an exhibition of work by Joanna Haskins, winner of the Brownston Gallery Fresh Talent Award in 2022.

Jo Haskins has always been inspired by the natural environment and in partcular landscapes. After spending time in Svarlbard in the high Arctic she has created a wonderful collection of paintings and screen prints which are on show at the gallery until the end of the month.

"I am inspired by the experience of a space in a landscape. I aim to portray my memories of the discovery of a place in the natural environment, through colour, shape and composition. At the moment that place is Svalbard in the high Arctic, an area I have visited regularly and where I become totally immersed in the Arctic landscape. I wish to share my experiences in order to bring awareness and appreciation to the viewer, inviting them to connect with the landscape and reflect on their position on this planet; on the ever-changing environment, so beautiful on occasions and yet hostile, dangerous and life threatening on others; on the power and strength of nature, and its uncertain outcomes. "

Jo Haskins qualified with a first class Degree in Painting, Drawing and Printmaking at Arts University Plymouth in July 2022 and is currently studying there for a Masters in Painting.  She originally studied Fine Art Painting at City and Guilds of London Art School where she received tuition from Humphrey Ocean among others, and has continued to draw and paint on a regular basis ever since.  

Jo is particularly interested in the process of printmaking and how that can inform her painting, allowing the techniques of painting and printmaking to inform each other. 

Fluent in French, she has spent many years living in the Southern Alps of France where she has participated in numerous exhibitions and art fairs. 

Everyone is welcome to join us at the private view which is taking place at the gallery on Thursday, 16th March from 6-8pm.
