University can be the best experience of your life if you allow yourself to dive in with both feet and take full advantage of all the opportunities that come your way. However, if you’re not naturally outgoing, it can also be a lonely time. With that in mind, let’s take a look at some of the ways that students can improve their confidence whilst they’re at universities:
Join Some Societies
Universities want to cater for everybody, regardless of their likes and dislikes, religious beliefs and their background. This is why societies exist. Run by the students for the students, societies are a superb way to meet new people and improve your social circles, and it’s a great deal easier to do it within a society because you are guaranteed to have similar interests.
There are societies for various subjects. These include, but are not limited to, societies for different religions and ethnic groups, film buffs, creative writing fanatics, and Star Wars enthusiasts. You name it; they’ve got it. And if they haven’t, why not start it yourself? Being the head of a society could certainly help you to develop leadership skills that you might need after you graduate and go out into the real world.
Work on Your Fitness
Three years at university can have a detrimental effect on your overall health. For many people, it’s the first time they’ve been away from home cooked meals, and this can mean lots of takeaways and lots of unhealthy snacks. You could soon find yourself creeping up a jeans size, so check out what the university has to offer in terms of fitness clubs, gyms, and societies based on physical activities, such as walking and swimming. Feeling and looking good will have a hugely positive effect on your confidence and keep you away from the dreaded pizza menu.
Volunteer at the Student Paper
Whether you want to be a journalist or not, the university student paper is a fantastic opportunity to learn how the university system works and to be hot on everything that is happening across the campus. You could report on student achievements and news or cover the sporting events for the society teams.
If you’re a music or film geek, there could even be a position for your writing news and reviews for gigs and movies - and you’ll get free passes to them from the Student Union, too. If you want to throw yourself into the university experience, the student paper is a very useful way to go about it.
Do Something That Scares You
Aversion therapy is a popular way of conquering your fears. For example, if you’re scared of spiders, your aversion therapy would be to hold a tarantula. The basis behind this is to see what you’re afraid of for what it is, and therefore conquer your fear.
You don’t have to do anything too drastic, but if there are things you’re interested in at university, don’t overthink it. Jump right in and enjoy the experience, whether it works out for you or not. What’s the worst that can happen? This could be anything from doing stand-up comedy to performing music at an open mic. Whatever your talent or interest might be, you should pursue it while you have this golden opportunity. No regrets. Just do it.
