Council seeks development partner for new St Budeaux library

Plans to create a new library for St Budeaux have moved a step forward with the current library site now being marketed as a development opportunity.

The Council is seeking a development partner to transform the half acre site in St Budeaux Square. As well as providing a light and airy library with a flexible space, the site could also include a range of mixed uses, including homes.

The site is close to the local post office, supermarket and neighbouring shops and facilities and the area has already enjoyed some redevelopment with new homes built nearby.

Councillor Glenn Jordan, Cabinet Member for Culture said: “We are keen to get on with the job and provide more modern and fitting facilities for the community in St Budeaux.

“The Plan for Libraries was designed around changing lifestyles as well as future needs of our residents and one issue it highlighted was the need to invest in facilities in St Budeaux.

“We want residents there to enjoy attractive and modern buildings, which can be adaptable and home to services which inspire and improve people’s health and wellbeing.”

The Plan for Libraries 2017 to 2020 was recently approved for implementation after extensive consultation. It aims to modernise the library service, so that more people can benefit from the range of services the Council provides.

The development specification says the site offers an exciting mixed use development opportunity within the centre of St Budeaux with a new public library, high quality residential (houses and/or flats) and other compatible commercial uses.

Appropriate levels of parking for the library and residential use would need to be considered.

The Library Service is keen to hear from interested partners and discuss proposals in more detail in order to meet the objectives. The aim is to have the new library open by Summer 2019.
