999 Day to raise funds for Gold Dust Appeal
A ‘999 Day’ has been organised by a young mother, in aid of the Gold Dust Appeal, on Sunday 23 October from 10:30-4:30.
Charlotte Tonks, who is currently representing Devon at the Mrs United Kingdom Galaxy Pageant, chose to support the Gold Dust Appeal after her son had to stay on level 12 for two weeks with para-influenza.
She said: “The Gold Dust Appeal is really close to many as it affects such a range of families across Devon and further. Most local families I know have experienced the children's wards at Derriford Hospital at some point and this appeal is a great opportunity to improve the experience of both the patients and families.
“As my husband is a qualified paramedic and I am currently in my third year of training, I thought it would be great to organise this type of event to give children an opportunity to see and learn about all three emergency services in a fun and relaxed way.
“The event will have vehicles and personnel from all three services and the children can have a look around all of the vehicles, chat to the staff and even have a go with some bits and pieces. There will also be real police hats and fire and ambulance helmets which can be tried on. We are also holding a tri-service tug of war competition and the public can get behind their favourite service by sponsoring them on the appropriate JustGiving link.”
On the day, there will also be a rugby tots running obstacle course and kicking competition, for which there will be prizes, a cake sale, face painting, craft activities, bouncy castle and a raffle. Food and refreshments will be provided by A Perfect Blend.
