Otter Nurseries and Radio Plymouth have announced the winners of this year’s scarecrow design competition.

This was the second year that the two organisations have teamed up to challenge children from local primary schools to design scarecrows for the chance to win gardening items for their school. The entries could either be drawn or made designs.

Trish Duff, Sales Director at Radio Plymouth said: “We had over 1,000 single entries this year, and the standard was incredible.

“Although we had one outstanding winner, it was very difficult to choose the runners ups, due to the quality of the entries. In the end, we added an extra runner up, making three in total.”

The winning school was Salisbury Road Primary School, which will receive a raised bed, compost and selection of plants. Each of the runners up, Oakwood Primary School, Plaistow Hill Infants and Mayflower Community Academy win a voucher for £50 to spend on gardening items or plants of their choice at the garden centre in Brixton.

Otter Nurseries Branch Manager, Philip Hewish said: “We were thrilled with the response to this year’s competition and it was a privilege to see all the great ideas the children had for their designs.

“The competition is a great way to interact with primary schools and encourage children to get creative, think about growing their own vegetables and eat more healthily. We’re already looking forward to the next one.”
