Don't risk driving through floodwater

Devon & Somerset Fire & Rescue Service is asking residents to heed warnings not to enter floodwater, as it could put themselves and others at risk.

Fire crews were called to several incidents where vehicles were stuck in floodwater to carry out rescues over the festive period. On 3 January, a cyclist was rescued in Newton Abbot after getting into difficulty near a swollen river.

A yellow weather warning for rain covering parts of Devon and Somerset has been issued by the Met Office as heavy rain showers are expected until Tuesday lunchtime.

The Environment Agency has also issued alerts for possible flooding on several rivers across the region.

Station Manager Matt Johnson said: “It is impossible to tell how deep water is or the condition of the ground beneath. You or your vehicle may be swept away or become stranded. Vehicles can float away in just two feet of water.

“If you do see floodwater on the road, do not attempt to travel through it; instead try to find an alternative route. If a road has been closed, it is for the safety of the public and closure signs should be respected.”

Further advice is not to walk or cycle through flooded areas. Even shallow water moving fast can sweep you off your feet and there may be hidden dangers such as open drains, damaged road surfaces, submerged debris or deep channels; these can cause serious injuries or even death.
