A Clinical Technologist from Derriford Hospital will be attending a careers event on Tuesday evening to share her positive experiences in the hope to inspire girls to consider jobs in Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM).

Leanne Moore, who is a Clinical Technologist within our Radiotherapy Physics department will be one of the 25 exhibitors, alongside the Royal Navy and the National Marine Aquarium at the open evening careers event on Tuesday 2 December at the University Technical College Plymouth, Devonport. More than 150 girls have registered to attend the event.

Leanne said: “I really enjoy my job and I am really keen to promote jobs within Healthcare Science and feel the best way to do this is to engage with students currently considering their career options. I will be promoting jobs within Radiotherapy Physics and explaining career pathways.

“My job role is based in Medical Physics, we provide clinical support services to Oncology, Neuroscience and Urology for the provision of radiotherapy treatment primarily to cancer patients. This involves manufacturing immobilisation devises and accessories, and planning the treatment delivery to ensure optimum dose to the target whilst minimising side effects for the patient. I will also be promoting our directorate work experience scheme, giving appropriate students the chance to see behind the scenes!”

Leanne added: “For girls who are good communicators, logical, problem solvers and have foundation knowledge in physics and an interest in technology, hopefully we can open their eyes to career options they didn’t even know existed! By sharing my positive experience I hope to inspire other girls to get involved with STEM.”
