Family workshops full of collections-inspired fun

If you’re looking for ways to keep the kids entertained during the second half of the summer break Plymouth City Museum and Art Gallery has a number of holiday activities on offer inspired by its permanent collections.

Wednesdays feature holiday drop-ins designed to help develop children’s creative skills. They run from 10.30am to 1pm, with last entries at 12.30pm.

On Wednesday 20 August children can create a paper chess piece inspired by the Museum’s large ‘A Royal Game’ sculpture, which recently returned to Plymouth after more than 20 years on loan. They’ll also be able to have a go at a game of chess.

On Wednesday 27 August they can make hilarious hats inspired by some of Plymouth’s most amazing collectors and characters.

The ‘Anyone for Chess?’ and 'Hats The Way To Do It’ drop-ins are both free, although donations are welcome. There’s no need to book in advance. People can go along for as little or as long as they like, but may be asked to wait a short while if the session is busy when they arrive.

At ‘Nautical but Nice’ on Thursday 28 August, children can design their own lighthouse, inspired by nautical objects from the collections.

This session runs from 10.30am to midday and there is a charge of £2.50 per child. Advance booking is advised through the Museum Welcome Desk or by calling 01752 304774.
