MTV will be ‘crashing’ Plymouth Hoe this summer to stage a spectacular live music event as part of the city’s ‘Three Towns’ centenary celebrations.

Organised in collaboration with the City Council, ‘MTV Crashes Plymouth’ will take place in July and feature a number of headline music acts.

It follows other massively popular MTV Crashes events staged in Glasgow, Belfast and Manchester and featuring acts including the Grammy award-winning Alicia Keys and P Diddy.

MTV Crashes Plymouth will be the centrepiece of the city’s ‘Three Towns’ centenary celebrations, marking 100 years since Devonport, Plymouth and Stonehouse joined to form Plymouth as it is known today.

The ticket-entry event will be broadcast on MTV’s flagship UK music TV channels MTV Music and MTV Live HD and subsequently across its other music channels, showcasing Britain’s Ocean City to worldwide audiences. As well as live coverage of the performances, MTV will be screening interviews with the acts, filmed in various Plymouth locations.

Deputy Council Leader Peter Smith said: “We’re really excited to be working with MTV to host this fantastic event, which will be one the main highlights of Plymouth’s centenary celebrations and an amazing opportunity to promote the city on a worldwide stage. It will bring the local community and visitors from all over the UK and beyond together in celebrating one of the most important dates in Plymouth’s history.

“Staging a live show of this scale will not only help to attract visitors and significantly boost the local economy – it will also cement Plymouth’s reputation as a leading venue for major national and international events, as well as a vibrant centre of music and culture.”

Kerry Taylor, Senior Vice President, General Manager, MTV UK commented: “MTV has really enjoyed ‘crashing’ other UK cities, but this will be our first visit to Plymouth, Britain’s Ocean City, the West Country and the first time we’ve ever staged one of our major live music events on a site with such strong historical associations. We’re really looking forward to working with local partners to stage a massive musical party and showcasing what Plymouth has to offer to youth audiences across the MTV portfolio.”

Duncan Currall, Chairman of Destination Plymouth added: “We are delighted to be partnering with MTV, the leading global music brand, on this event. Destination Plymouth, Plymouth Waterfront Partnership and City Centre Company BIDs and Plymouth City Council are all working closely together to deliver the visitor plan for the city.

“Hosting major music events and working with leading global brands is part of the long term strategy to position Plymouth as Britain’s Ocean City and to increase visitor numbers to the city by over 20 per cent by 2020.

“2014 is set to be a really fantastic year for events and this is the icing on the cake!”

Further MTV Crashes Plymouth details, including the date, artists confirmed to perform, ticketing and other specifics will be announced in due course and listed here.

Partners are working together to ensure only a nominal fee is charged for tickets and a proportion will be reserved for local event-goers.
