Police appeal for witnesses following serious collision in Beer

Police are appealing for witnesses following a serious road traffic collision in East Devon involving a motor home and a group of pedestrians.

The collision occurred at 11.07am on Tuesday 9 July at the junction of Common Lane and Fore Street in Beer, East Devon.

Weather and road conditions at the time of the RTC were believed to be good.

The vehicle involved was a German-registered Fiat Ducato motor home driven at the time by a 67-year-old German national.

It appears he has left the Beer Head Caravan Park and started to drive towards Beer but turned into Common Lane and headed the wrong way down a one-way street until its junction at the bottom of the hill with Fore Street.

The vehicle crashed through a wall adjoining Sea Hill, launched across Sea Hill before coming to rest partially in the leat on the eastern side of Fore Street.

As the vehicle was crossing Sea Hill it collided with a group of pedestrians.

Four pedestrians were taken to the  RD&E Hospital in Exeter with relatively minor injuries while a fifth was airlifted to Derriford with serious injuries.

The two occupants of the motor home were also taken to the RD&E for treatment.

The driver was released some time later and has been helping Police with their initial enquiries.

Weather and road conditions at the time of the road traffic collision were believed to be good.

Police from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit are  investigating the collision and ask that any witnesses to this incident contact them on 101 quoting police reference 0333 090713.
