Plymouth University celebrates second graduation ceremony in Hong Kong
More than 120 students have received their degree certificates from Plymouth University, during a ceremony thousands of miles away from the city’s main campus.
The University held its second graduation ceremony in Hong Kong as part of a growing partnership between Plymouth and the University of Hong Kong’s School of Professional and Continuing Education (HKU SPACE).
It sees a range of Plymouth’s business and maritime degrees being taught and awarded in Hong Kong, with the link being one of the many partnerships the University enjoys with institutions across the world.
Professor Wendy Purcell, Vice-Chancellor of Plymouth University, attended the graduation and said: “Graduation ceremonies are always a cause for celebration, but it is especially rewarding to see how Plymouth University’s enterprise agenda is being exported globally. Through partnerships with like-minded institutions across the world – such as the University of Hong Kong’s School of Professional and Continuing Education – we are working together to transform lives on an international scale.”
The partnership with HKU SPACE is currently Plymouth’s largest overseas link, with student numbers growing and over 500 based in Hong Kong.
This year’s graduation was held for students on the BSc (Hons) International Shipping and Supply Chain Management, BA (Hons) International Trade and Operations Management and BSc (Hons) Business Management courses, but new degrees including tourism and hospitality are continuing to be developed.
Professor Simon Payne, Dean of Academic Partnership at Plymouth University, added: “There are growing links between Plymouth and institutions across Asia, and they are evidence of our standing as a world class university and that our experience of delivering high quality academic programmes is reaping global rewards. Through these partnerships, we are developing the leaders of tomorrow, who will act as ambassadors for their nation and our University in the coming decades.”
As part of the graduation weekend, the University also held a celebratory event for alumni based in the Chinese territory. It was attended by around 100 guests, including several who had completed their studies in Plymouth since the 1970s and other recent graduates from Hong Kong itself.
Plymouth University’s international partnerships stretch from China to Sri Lanka, and India to the United States, and more information about the University’s global influence is available at www.plymouth.ac.uk/internationalplymouth.
