Characters from the National Theatre production of War Horse recently paid a visit to Derriford Hospital, bringing smiles and delight to both patients and staff.

Along with their puppeteers, Baby Joey and Goose popped in this afternoon to visit some poorly children and their families, in both the children’s day case unit and children’s wards on level 12.

Baby Joey and Goose paid a visit to our children's wards today Both patients and staff enjoyed interacting with the characters, who certainly enjoyed the attention, too.

“Part of our role is to organise fun activities for the children here, to keep them entertained and distract them from what they might be going through,” explains Jo Cross, Hospital Play Specialist. “So I thought I’d ask the production company if it might be possible to arrange a visit, especially considering the local connection with Michael Morpurgo.

“We were absolutely delighted that they agreed, and the smiles on the children’s faces today simply says it all. It’s been so lovely having them here.”

Rachel Roussel-Tyson, General Manager for War Horse said: “The puppeteers were really excited to have the opportunity to bring a little bit of Devon sunshine to children who we know are all being really brave. I’m sure the children loved meeting our Baby Joey and Goose, who have brought smiles to children all around the world.”

“We’d like to thank the War Horse team, not only for brightening the children’s days, but also for their very kind donation of books and DVDs. We all really appreciate it,” adds Jo.
