Trust honours key people

A Devon conservation charity has launched a new Honorary Membership scheme to thank hard-working supporters.

The Whitley Wildlife Conservation Trust is the charity that runs Paignton Zoo, Living Coasts in Torquay and Newquay Zoo in Cornwall, as well as several nature reserves in Devon.

The Board of Trustees has introduced the title for people who have made a distinguished contribution to the Trust itself; or in those fields associated with the aims of the Trust, such as education, conservation or advocacy (changing the way people behave for the benefit of biodiversity).

The first two Honorary Members are auctioneer and former High Sherriff of Devon Robin Barlow and retired Paignton Zoo and Living Coasts volunteer John Wallington. The Trust’s Executive Director Simon Tonge said: “Robin has been doing charity auctions for us for more than 25 years; John was a volunteer for around a quarter of a century.

“The scheme was the idea of existing Trustees; who wanted a way to keep in touch with ex-Trustees, former staff members and others who still have something of value to offer.”

The Trust expects to have fewer than ten Honorary Members at any one time.

Simon: “We hope that Honorary Members will generally support and promote the Trust in the course of their daily business. We may look to them for advice and expertise, a spot of public speaking or invite them to join a sub-committee.

“They will receive a certificate, free entry to Paignton Zoo, Newquay Zoo and Living Coasts and invitations to special events. Additionally, we hope this lifelong honour will also bring them the public recognition their good works deserve.”
