The National Trust is launching a free, regular guided walk through the historic village of Branscombe and is inviting enthusiastic volunteers to help bring local stories to life.

As part of the Walk With Us initiative, the National Trust aims to create a nationwide network of guided walks. These walks not only encourage people to connect with their local landscapes but also help combat loneliness and improve well-being.

Branscombe’s new monthly heritage walk, starting in May, will take participants on a fascinating journey through time, exploring the village’s rich history, including tales of ghosts, ancient sarcophagi, and smuggling. The route will also highlight the stunning natural features that make Branscombe one of the most picturesque villages in Devon.

To make this exciting project a success, the National Trust is looking for volunteer walk leaders and assistants. If you enjoy fresh air, local history, and sharing your enthusiasm with others, this is a fantastic opportunity to get involved. Volunteers can either take on the role of guide and storyteller or assist as a backmarker, ensuring the group stays together and helping with logistics.

Martin Jenning-Wright Volunteer and Community Officer for the National Trust East Devon Countryside Team said: "Branscombe is full of fascinating stories and beautiful landscapes, and these walks are a great way to share them with others. We’re looking for volunteers who enjoy being outdoors and meeting new people to help bring the village’s history to life. No experience is needed—just enthusiasm and a willingness to get involved."

No prior experience is necessary—full training will be provided, covering local history, group engagement techniques, and health and safety. If enough volunteers step forward, the walk could become a weekly event over the summer holidays.

If you’d like to be part of this engaging and rewarding experience, get in touch with the National Trust team in Branscombe at 01297 680507 or email branscombe@nationaltrust.org.uk
