Staff and volunteers at Saltram, in Plympton, are commemorating the 70th anniversary of the D Day landings as they prepare for ‘Spitfires and Sweethearts’, a 1940’s event taking place over Father’s Day weekend on 14 and 15 June, from 10am to 4pm.

Working in partnership with ‘The 1940’s Roadshow’, Saltram Park will come alive with a replica spitfire, entertainment, live munition displays and military and vintage stalls.

Part of the occasion is to share memories and stories of Plymouth during World War Two. Staff and volunteers at Saltram will be sharing their research into Saltram’s involvement. During the preparations for D Day on 6th June 1944, Saltram House was one of many US Army camps in and around Plymouth, one of which hosted the U.S 29th Infantry Division which landed at Omaha beach in Normandy on D Day and drive inland to help establish a beachhead.

To honour Plymouth’s involvement, the team is also asking for the local community to send in any stories or memories they might have of this time, particularly if it relates to Saltram. Please write to or email Fiona Macmillan, ‘Spitfires and Sweethearts’, Saltram, Plympton, Plymouth, PL7 1UH.

Tickets for the event are available to buy at £6 (adult), £3 (child) and £15 (family). For further information contact Rebecca Wickes, Visitor Experience Officer, on 01752 333500 or rebecca.wickes@nationaltrust.org.uk; or visit: www.nationaltrust.org.uk/Saltram for details of all upcoming events.
