Riverford Organics donates carrots to The Donkey Sanctuary
The Donkey Sanctuary Ivybridge received a special lockdown treat thanks to a donation of carrots from Riverford Organics.
Buckfastleigh based Riverford Organics had several bags of surplus carrots that they were able to donate to the resident donkeys at the Ivybridge centre, who deliver Donkey-Assisted Therapy for vulnerable children and adults throughout the local community
Dedicated grooms at the international charity are always looking for creative ways to keep the donkeys physically and mentally stimulated. The donated carrots will provide a much needed treat for the herd as well as being used for enrichment activities, such as hiding carrots within regular straw to encourage the donkeys’ instinctive foraging behaviour.
Anita Cota, Centre Manager, The Donkey Sanctuary Ivybridge said: “We were so touched to receive this donation. The generosity of local businesses, supporters and volunteers during this difficult time is amazing.”
A spokesperson for Riverford Organic Farmers, Becky Blench said: “It’s not only humans who love tasty, organic vegetables. These gnarly carrots may not be quite up to scratch for our veg boxes or staff canteen, but are still full of goodness. We’re delighted to be able to support such a good cause and prevent food waste too.”
The Donkey Sanctuary Ivybridge remains closed to visitors and office-based staff, but donkey-facing staff are still ensuring the resident donkeys continue to receive the highest level of care.
