Police urge Plymouth residents to be vigilant of bogus callers

Police across Plymouth are urging local residents to be vigilant of bogus callers. They have described a scam where criminals attempt to gain entry to properties, claiming to be workmen and often work in pairs, where the resident is distracted by one person while the other looks for items to steal.

Police are emphasising the need for people to be vigilant and not to let anyone into their homes without correct identification and an appointment.

Genuine callers will not object to customers calling their organisation to verify that they are who they say they are; when doing this, make them wait outside and keep the door closed, say police.

A police spokesman said: “If strangers are arriving at homes unsolicited without appointments we always say – if in doubt keep them out.”

“These bogus callers prey on the elderly and vulnerable – we want to catch these men and see that they’re brought to justice. We’re asking the public to keep an eye out and report anything suspicious to us immediately.”
