Plymouth is set to commemorate the First World War and celebrate the 100th anniversary of the amalgamation of the Three Towns of Plymouth, Devonport and East Stonehouse with its 2014 Plymouth Remembers campaign.

Plymouth Remembers features the city’s main festivals as well as city-wide and community events.

Over 70 events are confirmed so far and Plymouth City Council is keen for community groups and organisations to get involved too. The commemoration will include a series of informative and thought-provoking events that highlight the impact of the start of the First World War.  Large-scale outdoor events such as Lord Mayor’s Day and the British Firework Championships will also mark the centenary of Plymouth as a city.

The programme moves into full effect with the History Festival in May - tying in with the 100th anniversary of the Local Government Order that confirmed the decision to bring Plymouth, Devonport and East Stonehouse together.

Deputy Council Leader Peter Smith said: “This is truly an exciting year for us.  Plymouth Remembers will be a great way to commemorate the First World War and celebrate the centenary of the Three Towns. It will also put us in a great place to increase tourism and the visitor economy in the lead up to 2020, as well as demonstrate our capability and commitment to delivering city-wide programmes that involve all aspects of the community.”

Head of Arts & Heritage, Nicola Moyle said: “2014 is a significant milestone for the Plymouth as well as for the nation.  Plymouth became a city in 1914 and part of the reason for bringing the Three Towns together was because the military needed to be able to talk to one administration.  World War I and the amalgamation of the Three Towns will feature heavily in the Arts and Heritage programme this year, starting from 1 May when the History Festival and our ‘Plymouth’s Great War’ exhibition both begin.”
