Plymouth’s budding young writers of the future have been celebrated with the publishing of a book filled with their all their own work.

The city’s seventh anthology, which is packed with around 100 pieces of written work from children and young people was launched yesterday at the Plymouth Guildhall.

‘Imagine the possibilities’ is a collection of short stories and poems celebrating the talents of young writers aged six to 14 and this year links to the themes of fun and creative imaginations.

Earlier in 2014, school pupils were invited to submit their creatively written pieces, for consideration and over 500 did! The successful young authors were yesterday presented with their very own copies of the anthology from the Lord Mayor, along with book tokens. They were also entertained by the highly successful local children’s author and illustrator, Simon James.

The anthology is funded by Plymouth City Council and is part of autumn literacy based events that will see many schools and colleges across the city taking part in a range of activities to raise the profile of literacy and English, from the Young City Laureate to the Young Motion Plymouth film awards.

Councillor Sue McDonald, Cabinet Member for Children, Young People and Public Health said: “I’d like to thank all the children who wrote poems and pieces for the city’s anthology and congratulate those chosen this year. Encouraging young people to get involved in writing for fun is a great way to learn and there is a real sense of pride and achievement for those who get their work published.”

Copies of the Plymouth anthology will be sent to all Plymouth schools and libraries for everyone to enjoy.
