A new 'work club' offering support and advice for jobseekers is being launched at Devonport's St Aubyn Library.

Following the success of the Work Club at Crownhill Library, Careers South West is continuing to work in partnership with Plymouth City Council Library Service and is opening a new group at St Aubyn Library from July.

The programme offers adults aged 19 and over, who are on benefits and looking for work, with extra support to gain employability skills that will improve their chances of entering the job market.

Participants will be able to get advice on issues such as, CV writing, interview preparation, training and funding, as well as the chance to talk to guest speakers, including people from local businesses, about opportunities in the area.

Individuals will be able to access support from professionals in an environment where they can build new contacts, share job hunting experiences and gain the skills needed to enter into employment. Skills Support for the Unemployed is a programme run by Careers South West, funded by European Social Fund and secured through the Skills Funding Agency.

Zoe Payne, Employment Skills Adviser for Careers South West said: "This is a great chance for individuals to gain accreditations and work towards individual goals whilst receiving support from their peers and professionals at Plymouth Library Service and Careers South West. The programme is tailored around an individual’s personal needs so it really helps them to achieve their aspirations."

Zoe added: "We also welcome involvement from local businesses who can provide insights into their occupational sector, help with mock interviews or even provide work tasters, so if you feel you can offer your support please get in touch as this can make a real difference to people’s lives."

Councillor Peter Smith, Deputy leader of the Council added: "We are pleased that our library service is able to be part of such an important project. Helping people find jobs and increase their confidence is crucial to the city's future. Solid practical advice from people who know what they are talking about s just the job!"

The Skills Support for the Unemployed Work Group will start on Thursday 11 July at St. Aubyn Library, Chapel Street, Devonport from 1.30pm until 4.30pm. To find out more or attend the Work Group please contact Plymouth City Council Library Service on 01752 305900 or emaillibrary@plymouth.gov.uk.
