Motorists urged to take extra care this weekend
As the Bank Holiday weekend approaches South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust (SWASFT) is expecting a busy weekend across the region and is urging drivers to take extra care on the roads.
An influx of visitors is expected to descend on the South West’s tourist spots this weekend, especially as it is the last weekend for families to enjoy a break before schools begin the new autumn term.
Many of the visitors to the region will arrive by road and this could lead to delays on some routes. SWASFT is asking drivers to be patient and make sure their vehicle is road worthy before heading out.
Every year front-line crews from across the Trust attend thousands of road traffic collisions and many of these accidents could have been avoided if motorists carried out a few simple checks on their vehicles;
- Check tyres for pressure and tread
- Ensure wiper blades and all lights are in good working order
- Remember that stopping distances will increase on wet roads. Double the distance between you and the car in front
- Before any long journey the check engine oil level, radiator coolant level and windscreen washer level
A spokesman for SWASFT said: “Ambulance crews are often on the front line when it comes to dealing with the aftermath of an incident on the roads. Every year we attend thousands of preventable incidents where an increased awareness of road safety would make a real difference.
“The Trust is urging drivers to slow down and take care on the roads, especially if you are a visitor to the area and are unfamiliar with the region. It may also be worth keeping an eye on the weather conditions and planning your trip accordingly."
